Mitochondrial Function Test

A comprehensive biochemical analysis of your cellular metabolism, designed to provide deeper insight into how effectively your cells produce and manage energy.
Your mitochondria are the foundation of cellular energy
Discover how efficiently your cells produce the energy your body needs for physical and mental performance.
Identify patterns that may be associated with reduced cellular energy production, oxidative stress, and impaired recovery.
Turn detailed biochemical insights into a personalised strategy to support mitochondrial health, resilience, and long-term wellbeing.

What do we analyze?

We measure key aspects of mitochondrial energy production and cellular respiration to show how efficiently your mitochondria perform under normal conditions and when energy demand increases.

Basal respiration
Measures the oxygen your cells consume under normal conditions, providing a baseline view of cellular and mitochondrial energy demand.
ATP production
Evaluates how much of your mitochondrial respiration is used to produce ATP—the primary form of energy your cells use to function.
Mitochondrial reserve capacity
Measures how much additional energy-producing capacity your mitochondria can activate when demand increases, providing insight into cellular resilience and metabolic flexibility.
Mitochondrial efficiency
By analysing several respiratory parameters together, the BHI Plus provides insight into how efficiently your mitochondria convert oxygen into usable cellular energy.
Non-mitochondrial respiration
Measures oxygen consumption occurring outside the mitochondria. Elevated levels can be associated with pro-oxidative and pro-inflammatory cellular processes and negatively affect the BHI Plus.
Bioenergetic Health Index (BHI Plus)
The individual measurements are combined into the BHI Plus, providing an overall assessment of mitochondrial performance. It considers ATP production, reserve capacity and non-mitochondrial respiration to provide a more complete picture of mitochondrial function.

Understand how your cells produce energy

Mitochondria are often described as the powerhouses of our cells. They generate most of the energy required for physical and mental performance, recovery, and normal cellular function.

When mitochondrial energy production is less efficient, it may be reflected in patterns associated with reduced energy availability, exercise tolerance, or recovery. These experiences can have many different causes, which is why mitochondrial findings should always be interpreted alongside your medical history, lifestyle, nutrition, physical performance, and other health data.

Our mitochondrial function test provides a detailed biochemical view of cellular metabolism. Rather than looking at a single marker, it examines patterns across interconnected metabolic pathways to build a broader picture of how your body produces and processes energy.

At AYUN, results are reviewed in the context of your individual health profile. Where appropriate, they can inform personalised strategies involving nutrition, lifestyle, recovery, and targeted interventions. These may include approaches designed to support mitochondrial adaptation and function, such as IHHT (Intermittent Hypoxia-Hyperoxia Therapy) and HBO/HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy).

Our approach is simple: measure mitochondrial function, identify opportunities for optimisation, and objectively track changes over time.
